Get inspired by … Adrianna Krajewska!

Adrianna Wiśniewska Adrianna Krajewska is an ESL teacher and ELT author from Poland. She has written materials for Oxford University Press and local publishing houses. She is the author of numerous national language competitions, Secondary School test books, teachers’ guides and articles for education magazines in Poland.

When did you first know that you wanted to be an ELT writer?

I had always known that, but it long remained in the world of dreams. I guess it was when I first published my worksheets online and they got downloaded by quite a few people that I took the job seriously. I decided to share my materials as they simply worked well for my classes and I received positive feedback from students and other teachers.

What was the first thing that you ever had published?

It might have been a Sci-Fi short story I wrote for a Polish magazine. Or maybe the lyrics of the songs I wrote for my friends’ band? I’m not sure, but my first ELT material in English was a secondary level test book for a local publishing house.

When was the first time you thought of yourself as an ‘author’?

Author!? I guess it was when my mentor, Atena Juszko, called me an author. She is one of the most inspiring people I have ever met and I do appreciate all her help. Before that, I had just been a teacher who designs materials …

What’s your favourite part of the writing process?

I am over the moon when an offer comes, ‘We are currently working on a project … would you like to … .’   But my favourite part of the process is the writing itself. Particularly, the first draft. Working at night, in a coffee house (this is how I call my flat), creating stories, and visualising the users. Quietness is the secret ingredient.

What advice would you give to aspiring ELT writers?

Never ever think you are too old to learn! Be prone to criticism and remember that perfection is a matter of time, and it might even be unattainable. Some people believe you should only write if you are perfect. I would rather say: write whatever suits you, for practice or pleasure. Be active and publish materials on your blog. Even if it remains unnoticed, writing for yourself is a great thing. At least you will save a lot on psychotherapy.

If you could have any other job, what would it be?

I would like to be a book illustrator or a full-time ELT Author. The first option is just another dream …

Adrianna, thank you so much for contributing to the ‘Get inspired by …’ series and for the lovely mention (it brought a tear to my eye …). Adrianna is a really talented and creative writer and such a pleasure to work with!
