I’ve never been into writing early-primary materials, but since I’ve been helping my kindergartner with her home-learning, this age group has grown on me.
Inspired by a book that my daughter’s teacher asked her class to read (‘Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt’), I put together this nature scavenger hunt.
My daughter thoroughly enjoyed this activity. It was a great opportunity to increase her observation skills, explore our new neighbourhood (we had just moved before social-distancing started), and to talk about all of the things that are ‘up in the garden and down in the dirt.’ We used our senses to talk about the items she found: What does it look like? How does it feel? How does it smell? Does it make a sound? (when we listened to the shell).
We also talked about things that are good and bad for the environment (like people leaving litter in the forest, for example).
It was also a great opportunity to practise letter sounds and read the words.
Above all, it was a wonderful bonding experience and a chance to spend some time together while being in tune with the nature around us.
You can download the template for the scavenger hunt plus three covers. Print them in landscape format (no need to change the size) and then stick them to an egg carton. Have fun!
